Between the engineering major and becoming a teacher: When and why do students choose PLan C?

Abstract

Since the acquisition of qualified and capable teachers for the commercial- technical subjects of vocational schooling remains an enduring problem, this contribution inquires into the reasons that lie at the foundation of the recruitment problem. To this end, results from the project “PLan C“ are presented, the aim of which is to examine the potential in targeting engineering students for recruitment as vocational educators. It is apparent that within this target group there are students interested in pursuing vocational teacher education who have made a justified shift from an engineering degree to one in vocational education, yet the number of such students remains relatively low.

The structure of vocational interests from students and the involved potential for the recruitment from students of lectureship

Abstract

The dearth of teaching staff at technical vocational schools led to the creation of additional recruitment potentials. Examples thereof are the reorganisation of the training programs, and the possibility of different entrance models (Nickolaus 1996; Ziegler 2004). In our opinion, the enduring recruitment difficulty attendant to the different kinds of training models underscores the ubiquity of this problem. In agreement with the theory of vocational choice of Holland (1997), we impute that the necessary or desirable characteristic interests for vocational education teachers are lacking. Partial overlaps of the interest profiles of vocational education teachers with that of students of vocational education studies can also be assumed. Given this background, we examine the question of how the interest profiles of the aforementioned fields of studies differ, and to what extent vocational education studies and engineering sciences offer a recruitment potential for engineering pedagogy. It was apparent that in particular students of engineering sciences had intersections in their interest profiles with students of engineering pedagogy.

Innovative Master’s Programme for Engineering Sciences: Vocational Teacher Education linking teaching theory and practice

Abstract

The innovative Master’s programme ‘Integrated Vocational Education’ links teaching theory and practice, which usually take place sequentially, for the very first time within a structured teacher training course. The three-year training concept dovetails a theoretical Master’s degree course with a two year teacher practice course. Intensive coordination between universities and the responsible government institutions (Staatliches Studienseminar), both entities having a joint responsibility for the professional standards to be attained by trainee teachers, has resulted in a new approach being formulated and initiated for the training of teachers at vocational schools. This pioneering approach generates high synergy effects and important future benefits regarding professional standards in vocational teacher training. Moreover, this new and compact Master’s programme addresses the shortage of teachers in two fields, metal technology and electrical engineering & information technology, by directly offering fast track access to a career as a teacher at a vocational school for those people who already hold a BA in Engineering Sciences.
