Effective occupational safety is central to a safe working life and is part of the curriculum for all apprenticeships. So far, no empirical studies on the implementation of the requirements can be found. For metalworking and electrical engineering apprenticeships, an online survey of teachers and trainers in North Rhine-Westphalia was conducted to determine the amount of time, the key topics, the materials used and the perceived obstacles. The results show that occupational safety is taught with a focus on protective measures and that the knowledge of teachers depends primarily on their individual educational background. Lack of time and inadequate materials are seen as obstacles. Greater professionalisation of teachers and the development of suitable teaching materials are required.
